8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
For most, we have heard and know the truth in this verse. It’s a staple in our Christian beliefs, but too often we forget about God’s grace and serve him with the wrong motives.
Here’s a question for you, Why do you serve, do missions, share the Gospel, tithe, etc…? Do we think God will love us more if we faithfully do these things? Do we feel we have to do these things to earn Gods love? The reason behind what we do (motives) for Christ makes all the difference.
If we have received Jesus Christ as our Lord we have received the ultimate gift of love. We have become heirs (Romans 8:17) to Christ, a child of God and nothing we do will change that relationship. God’s love will never increase or decrease towards us due to our actions. Because of what He did we serve! (James 2:18) It has become our nature to do these things out of love for our Savior! If we serve with the wrong motive sit will never be enough. We will grow tired and eventually give up.
Take a moment today and examine your motives. God wants us to live in His grace and serve out of love, rather than to earn His love. It’s the only way we can truly serve our King!
