Hello Summit Family!

I heard author Margaret Feinberg speak at a conference. This gifted author shares the research she did about numerous “word pictures” that God uses in the Bible. She shares about time spent with a shepherd in Ireland to prepare for one of her books. Margaret shares that she and the shepherd walked along the edge of the ranch chatting. They walked together past barns, through numerous gates and empty sheep pens. The sheep were gathered grazing, far out in the distance, barely within sight. Suddenly the shepherd began to whisper.  Margaret began to whisper too, continuing their conversation. The shepherd asked in barely audible, hushed tones,  “Margaret, why are you whispering?”  Margaret whispered back, “I thought I had to because you are –“. The shepherd said, “No need for YOU to whisper.”  Confused, Margaret asked, “Well, then why are you whispering?”  The answer – The Sheep.  The shepherd explained that the sheep are so tuned to the voice of their shepherd that they will actually run and charge toward the shepherd’s voice, – but ONLY the SHEPHERD’S voice. The sheep can differentiate the shepherd’s voice from all others. The sheep know their shepherd will lead them to safety, nourishment, and peace.

John 10, is one of my favorite passages of scripture. Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd, and tells His followers about His great love for them. This love will cause Him to “lay down His life for the sheep.” Jesus talks about His resurrection. He speaks of sheep being gathered together as one flock with oneshepherd.  In verse 27 & 28, Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and my sheep KNOW ME  ….. they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

Today there are so many voices yelling around us. Respect, conversations, and true listening are often scarce; however, if we listen – carefully, prayerfully, humbly for the Savior’s voice, we WILL be able to discern HIS voice from all others. Oh, how I want to be like the sheep in Margaret Feinberg’s story. I want to be tuned in to all that Jesus wants to share with me!  Jesus wants us to know Him and follow Him. How wonderful to be a part of His flock, that He leads, protects, and guides! I can hardly wait to see what He has for us next!

Serving Christ along with you,

Jerilyn
